"Winter under cultivation
Is as admirable as Spring"
--Emily Dickinson
"Where flowers bloom
so does hope"
--Ladybird Johnson
"Over which thine eyebrows, leaning,
Picture out each lovely meaning:
In a dainty bend they lie,
Like to streaks across the sky,
Or the feathers from a crow,
Fallen on a bed of snow.
Of thy dark hair that extends
Into many graceful bends:
As the leaves of Hellebore
Turn to whence they sprung before."
--John Keats

Today I am thankful for the buds of Hellebores, alive and well under the layer of snow in my garden.

Hurray for hellebore buds, Jan! They are just one of the best promises of spring, aren't they? Hoping for more to come your way soon...
ReplyDeleteBeautiful buds!! I look forward to seeing the blooms. Thank you for exposing them for us. :)
ReplyDeleteYou're a trooper, Jan! Yes, hellebore buds ... a fine/lovely/hopeful post.
ReplyDeleteLovely, Lovely Jan! Beautiful words and so glad your Hellebores are holding safely in wait.
ReplyDeleteLovely buds and verse. Hellebores are such little troopers to push through the snow.
ReplyDeleteI like Helleborus I have 2 different kinds in my garden, the buds give hope for the spring in our wet country at the moment Thanks for reminding them

What an awesome plant! No snow here but I removed leaves this weekend to discover my hellebore poking their heads up. Keeping fingers crossed that we will have good news today that spring is not far away.
ReplyDeleteIt is a nice feeling to know that no matter what's going on on top, the hellebores are down there waiting to spring out with even a little warm encouragement.
ReplyDeleteWhat an enjoyable Garden Bloggers' Muse Day post. I need to get back to participating. I've missed it.

Hi Jan, and thanks for stopping by my blog to let me know about that bird feeder. I have seen one of those at a friend's house--they are very effective. Unfortunately, my bird feeder is less than 3 feet from the front of my house, so that could be pretty tough on the squirrels, depending on their trajectory
ReplyDeleteI'll visit here again. Beautiful pictures on this site!
Glad to see the Hellebores coming up through all that rotten snow you have had.
ReplyDeleteNice to include the quote from LBJ, she did so much across the country in revitalizing the native flowers. Every planting along the interstate is thanks to her initiative. I remember when it first started.
Jan, I'm hoping my hellebores are doing the same thing under their snow blanket. Happy Groundhog Day!
ReplyDeleteWhat a good sign those chilled buds are.
