Balloon Flower (Platycodon grandiflorus)
These are only a 'few' of my blues...I've posted some of my blooms in blue on other posts.

I want to add a different take on this subject. It isn't meant to be a depressing post...because Blue Is My All-Time Favorite Color...but it does involve the 'true blues', and one way in which they can be manifested is: Seasonal Affective Disorder. I posted this last December and used the lovely bluebirds as a backdrop to talk about the blues. Here's the link:I must repeat: Blue Is My All-Time Favorite Color, so this isn't meant to be a sad take on the blues. I just love bluebirds and their color goes so well with this theme. I illustrated my post on Seasonal Affective Disorder with lots of bluebirds...so you might want to take a look!
Additionally, it might be helpful for someone out there who really does have the blues--as it often begins around the holidays.
--Today I am thankful for 'blues';-)
Words and photos by Jan Huston DobleThanks For 2 Day.
Love blue. Had blue and also white Ballon flowers but they seem to have disappeared. Ah...how the garden changes.
ReplyDeleteMy first garden bed I wanted all blue but it was a shade bed with bad soil...you can guess how that turned out.:(
Jan, What is that first flower with the bee on it? I love that shade of blue violet. -Jean

Hello Jan,
ReplyDeleteThank you for your uplifting post and showing us that blue can brighten our day. I especially love the little blue bird.
My favorite color. I love all blue things.
ReplyDeleteJan what a great post - and yes blue is suppose to be a soothing relaxing color - in fact after hearing that when we were remodeling our fixer up we bought 19 years ago I did the living room in a pale blue, along with blues in the furniture and my kitchen is in blues too. Shoot I should be almost comotose with all those relaxing blue colors. ;-)
ReplyDeleteUsually I stay busy enough through the holidays to stave off the blues, January and Febuary are another story. But soon enough Georgia Blue Speedwell is blooming and other things begin to poke up through the cold soil, and I am back on an even keel.
ReplyDeleteBlue is one of my favorites in the garden too. The caryopteris is great! The bluebirds have been enjoying the roof of my greenhouse-shed as a landing zone lately. It's fun to watch them!
ReplyDeleteJan,
ReplyDeleteDitto! I love the bluebird too! They are such a beautiful color and I miss them when they migrate.
Nice post about blue. I love Kiki!

That Bluebird picture is gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteYou know that is one colour I don't ahve in either my gardens or down at the allotment flower beds!
ReplyDeleteI have chronic depression but it gets MUCH worse at this time of year, I'm certain it's SAD. The hubby is getting me a daylight stimulation blub to see if it makes any difference.
Bluebirds are gorgeous, great capture.
I love your blue blooms. Think Caryopteris is such a great shrub.
ReplyDeleteJust bought some more mealworms for my bluebirds. They are so fun to see. Your photo is great!
What a wonderful blue post, I love platycodon and planted some speedwell late this year. The little bird is darling, I will look at your previous post on SAD, it's an important reminder that the shorter days and holiday season can be a very hard time for some.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful blues! Yes, I love the bluebird too :)
ReplyDeleteHi Jan, I too love blue flowers. What a great idea for a post... especially over the winter. I will definitely sort through my photos and find some blue flowers to post. Happy turkey day!
ReplyDeleteI adore the photographs and appreciate the sentiments in your blog. It's difficult as an American living abroad to see everyone talking about Thanksgiving today, and I had to kick myself a bit to remind myself of all the things I have to be grateful for, instead of moping about not being in Boston having turkey with my mother and my sister. I'm glad I came across your blog today!
ReplyDeleteI just discovered your blog through blotanicals and love your photos - thanks for sharing. Your bluebird is great!
ReplyDeleteJan, it is true that sometimes the most joyous occasions result in bad cases of the blues. Hopefully you are doing well and everyone else in this Garden Blogging sphere! Have a wonderful weekend. :-)
ReplyDeleteJust lovely, Jan! Especially the Bluebird ;)
ReplyDeleteHi5! I love blue too and I was so badly disappointed when none of my cornflowers survived last year.
ReplyDeleteBTW, nice to see you up and busy. My Plantville is going through a overhaul and after a week's vacation and a very very long break from blogging, I'm refreshed and ready again.
Lovely! I find blue sometimes difficult to photograph, but your pics really bring home the blue-ness of it all!
ReplyDeleteYou sure have some pretty blues in your garden! I've decided I simply don't have enough blue in my garden, and it's my favorite color!
ReplyDeleteBlue is my all-time-favorite-color, too! When I planted my first flowerbed, I wanted shades of blue and found that it wasn't easy to find blue flowers. I planted some blue Endless Summer hydrangeas, but by the following year they were pink, of course:) I will have to check out Kiki's post for other ideas on planting.
ReplyDeleteWhile I don't suffer from SAD, I do get the post-holiday blues sometimes. Thanks for the pretty bluebird and reminders about using nature to avoid the sad "blues."
Hi Jan, I have an award for you on my blog, I hope you will accept it.But will understand if you don't do awards and things. M x
ReplyDeleteCool idea.
ReplyDeleteGlad I looked at this post because I wasn't familiar with the 1st and 3rd flower. So, now I know of 2 more blue plants.
After all the fall colors that have surrounded us and now the red and green of Christmas, it's a delight to see all your blue blooms. Refreshing post.
ReplyDeleteI also love blue, and that color just adds something to the garden. I can't quite put it into words. You have some wonderful blue bloomers and I love your little blue bird.
