None of the above are frightening, although the latter have been known to give a parent their fair share of concern!
What about snakes? Did I say snakes?
This juvenile Black Rat Snake made an appearance this evening. He's trying to look scary for Halloween. Really, he's quite harmless, but can fool predators when he needs to. Just look at that face, that mouth wide open with hissing tongue. He's not poisonous and will not bite unless provoked. He will grow up to be as long as 8 feet and will eat small rodents such as mice, chipmunks, bats...even squirrels.
Little boys and Black Rat snakes are equally harmless...although, snakes won't turn your hair gray and give you wrinkles from worry.
Happy Halloween my friends.
--Today I am thankful for frightfully friendly fun on Halloween.
Words and photos by Jan Huston DobleThanks For 2 Day.
That snake is beautiful. They look so different as juveniles!
ReplyDeleteJan,
ReplyDeleteSeen lots of Black Rat Snakes never any juveniles like this one! We found two different snakes in the garden today, a Little Brown Snake and a Worm Snake, both eat slugs YEAH! We filled the car today with hellebores and other shade loving plants today from a very old established garden.
I can relate to the gray hair & wrinkles bit, lol. My youngest son just started driving, if that's not frightening I don't what is! ;) Hope you had a Happy Halloween Jan.
ReplyDeleteHi Jan~~ Teenaged boys definitely make me uneasy. I have two teenaged daughters! An 8 foot snake? Are you kidding? CREEPY. I wouldn't call him "harmless." If he came upon me unexpectedly I would have a heart attack. LOL
ReplyDeleteI have always been scared of snakes. I can see why from you photos! Happy Halloween!
ReplyDeleteSnakes are what does it for me! Not deathly afraid but enough to have me running in the house and hide for a few days!
ReplyDeleteGreat pics, Jan!
Lynn
Jan, what did you have to do to get the snake to show his hissing tongue? The photos are outstanding and they DO scare me. We had many teenage trick or treaters last night, all dressed up in really fun costumes. They seemed to be having fun and were polite. We enjoyed them as much as the little people.

ReplyDeleteImpressive snake photos!! Very impressive. I find them fascinating but they slither away too quickly to get such a good look.
ReplyDeleteHope all had a good Halloween!
Jan, we had dozens of trick or treaters yesterday, but that is the most frightening thing I have seen this Halloween :D
ReplyDeleteI can't bear snakes. Even pictures of them make me feel sick. Though I'm sure any snake of yours is lovely. In theory.
