Winter Backyard Bird Series: #7 (Birds Before Blooms)

Before spring 'officially' arrives and our blogs are filled almost exclusively with garden beds and flowers, my snow birds are begging to put on a brief show. So I thought we'd check a little bit about the 'Birds Before Blooms':

March 5 brought our second snowfall, double the amount of the first one. As usual, the birds came out for the event:

I derive a great deal of pleasure from the avian antics in my backyard! Sometimes I think that if it weren't for the birds, my winters would be lacking in much needed color:

Do you enjoy backyard bird watching?

--Today I am thankful for avian antics;-)

  1. Jan, you do get the prettiest birds at your place. We love watching them but don't have near the variety that you get. I've noticed too that some pretty ones stay down lower and we never see them up where we are. But we do love watching the ones we have.
    Your pictures are so beautiful!

  2. Your winterbirds are so colourful!
I stopped feeding the birds at the end of February, and since that time, I didn't see the great spotted woodpecker (Dendrocopos major) anymore, he is the most colourful of our visitors.

  3. Jan,
The birds vivid colors really show against the snowy background. Birdwatching is one of my favorite activities, my husband always says " how many more feeders do you need?" I say, more feeders, more birds. LOL

  4. Wonderful bird pictures Jan! They are so entertaining and colorful, and while there are fewer of them in the winter, around here, they are easier to spot when the trees are bare. They sure have been enjoying our mild, spring-like weather this week!

  5. Jan, your birds are very colourful. I love to see the birds, though the ones I get are not quite as colourful as yours. I have enjoyed your snow scenes but hope spring comes quickly for you.

    Best wishes Sylvia (England)

  6. Jan,

Nice series of photos! That grackle with the black mask is strange, not a Rusty Blackbird is it?

  7. What pretty colors on the birds,
I love to watch them. I get to see
a pair of hawks that flies over
my garden in the summer time.

  8. I enjoy watching the birds a lot too. I really like the picture of the cluster of the bluebirds. I don't think I have seen so many bluebirds together. I have Mr. & Mrs. Bluebird all the time....but just them. Enjoy the birdies!

  9. Jan,
Great post! Yes, I love our avian friends.

My husband and I noticed all the sing outside our bedroom window at 7:30am this morning. The birds are very happy today!

We had a squirrel trying to get inside the garden room yesterday. He kept jumping up on the door and windows! He sat on the back of a patio chair to stare inside!

    Happy Saint Patrick's Day!

  10. I hope that's the last snow we'll see this year. Even the little squirrel is covered in flakes.

Do you keep meal worms out for the bluebirds? I always wondered how the live worms did in cold weather.

I haven't tried real hard to attract bluebirds because I have English sparrows in my old barns. Kind of a dilemma.

  11. Yes, very much so. I want to be right there with them. Your collages are perfect.

  12. Yes, of course I enjoy backyard bird watching! I'm even going to do a crane count on April 18! Although, admittedly, my favorite of your birds is the squirrel! ;-)

  13. Lovely bird collages! I have a lot of birds here today! I put the birdbaths out this morning and within seconds a robin jumped in one to get a bath! I've had a few checking out my nest boxes too.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Amazing! I love to watch the ones in my backyard, but I don't have as many. Still, they come to the birdbath and pick the redwood seeds. Wonderful photos!

  15. Your bird collages are wonderful Jan. Like Randy, I am wondering what the blue headed, masked black bird is in the bottom of the second collage?? I've never seen that one. Great photos and yes, I'm a bird-watcher too! I get the most variety when the weather is bad. Does that mean we should like snow and cold??!!!

  16. Really lovely photos of lovely birds Jan! The birds around here aren't quite as colorful, although the Rufous hummers are migrating through at the moment and they are simply gorgeous!

  17. Do I enjoy backyard bird watching? I LOVE it. In fact, I've been on birding trips just to see certain birds. I really love your bird pictures. I wish I could get as close as you seem to get. I use a telephoto but maybe it's the photographer, not the equipment. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  18. How do you get so many colorful birds? I love the bluebirds. The collages are very pretty. I like how the squirrel has a dusting of snow on him.

  19. Jan~~ Your photos are amazing. The snow really brings out the colors of the birds and the avian antics must be very entertaining. I have garden cats so birds are not encouraged. They do sidle through however and sing from the safety of tree tops.

  20. What pretty collages of the feathered & furry visitors to your garden Jan! Their colors really are striking against all that snow. :)

  21. It's become one of my favorite pastimes! You've got some very different birds than we do. They are beautiful!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Simply magical!
    Thank you!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Of course I do! If only I had so many varieties, but I love watching birds - best time killer. Great photos, as ever, Jan!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Jan, your pictures are wonderful. They really capture the beauty of each bird. I enjoy bird watching, but am not very good at identifying them. I am sure we don't have the variety you do though. :}

    ReplyDelete
  25. Enjoyed every single picture of your birds. the snow makes them look so pretty that I almost wish it would snow again. Kidding, of course. And may I say that you are so kind to visit so many of our blogs.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Hi Jan, you sure do "grow" beautiful birds! And I just love the statue and mr. squirrel with snow on them too. My in-laws are in Charlottesville...you anywhere near there?

  27. This is such a great post for my tired eyes this morning; I'm staying in town where I work part of the week and haven't seen any birds to speak of, so these brought a smile to my face as I head into my day.

  28. What wonderful pictures Jan. My favorite collage is the last one, with the four bluebirds at the birdbath (a really stunning picture) and the snow-covered squirrel.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Oh my, yes! Love your vast array of them. You have the lovely bluebirds I so love!

  30. Beautiful photos, but you can have that snow. Ick! I'll pass. LOL I don't know how you capture all those birds in photo form, they're so darned fast!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Jan, Thank you so much for the bird collages (and the squirrel)!! You have such a great array of photographs. I don't have the zoom power on my little digital. Have a great day!!! (Spring is coming!)

    ReplyDelete
  32. You capture the most amazing pictures of the birds visiting your feeders. How do you do it??

    ReplyDelete
  33. I know just what you mean...I keep thinking I need to post more bird photos, snow and all, before the blooms take over our blogs.
I love seeing all your feathered friends. They love that waterer, don't they? So far I've only seen one chickadee drink from our newly set up waterer. I'm sure they'll adapt to it eventually. We recently found a nice birdbath too for the garden. The 4 bluebirds photo is especially lovely, but they're all wonderful, and yes, so colorful. Thanks for sharing your joy, Jan :)

    ReplyDelete
  34. WOW!!!!! This is an outstanding post, Jan! I love seeing birds at bird feeders. Is that a grackle I see? Hm...and an unusual woodpecker I'm not familiar with...where's my bird book?

    ReplyDelete
  35. AND, I forgot to comment on the bluebirds. I've never had that many at one time - how pretty!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Ha! I see that a squirrel managed to sneek in too. I wish I had your winter color, then maybe it wouldn't be so drab around here. Although to me the return of birds signals spring. I might be confused if I saw all of those birds all winter long.

I love your captures. I can not get such great wildlife pictures no matter what I do!

  37. A fine post jan...really beautiful photos! gail

  38. Stunning collages, Jan ... you certainly have a gift. Happy Spring!

  39. Beautiful photos, Jan! I've been wanting to do a similar post, collecting some bird pictures over the last month or two, but my photos don't compare to yours:) This is the first year I have regularly put out birdseed and suet, and the birds have rewarded me with many pleasurable hours.

You do have some beautiful and varied birds at your house...but I think there might be an imposter in that last row of photos:)

  40. HI Jan, Your birds there are really colorful, they are such a contrast with the white snow thus making them stand out really nice. Great pictures, even the birds there knew how to pose :)

    ReplyDelete
  41. Wow, many birds I've never seen before. Gorgeous photos, very impressive. What is the bird with the blue back and orange front? I love those guys, and they seem to love your place. Thanks for posting; how patient you must be to get so many great pictures of these creatures.

  42. Those are stunning. I'm quite envious, and need to keep reminding myself that I have cats, and therefore have no business luring birds to my yard. I'll just have to keep enjoying them vicariously through others' posts--like this one. Thank you!

  43. I just love all your bird photos. You have so many birds in your back yard - I really envy you! In Sweden, the birds are all grey and brown and very dull, not as colorful as yours in America.

I have one bird friend though, a Blackbird who isn't shy at all. He follows me around and is often sitting just a few steps away when I'm working in the garden. And sometimes he sings for me too! That's really nice! =)

  44. I love the photo with multiple bluebirds. They look so pretty in the snow.

  45. Oh my Jan... what beautiful montages. What lovely colours your birds have. Oh yes... as you might guess I too enjoy backyard bird watching! Have a great day :-D

    ReplyDelete
  46. I do agree with HelenJ " In Sweden, the birds are all grey and brown and very dull, not as colorful as yours in America. " BUT we do have a few that are very colorful but it is hard to see them and even harder to take a photo of them.

I saw that a lot of you had your birthday and thank you for showing us al the books.

It is so lovely to see all you birds and I find it funny and interesting to see the "angel and the blue boll" mixed with the birds photo.
I am sitting here smiling, thank you.

  47. Superb! The birds are incredible and I am glad that I can watch them on your blog, because I don't have the chance to catch many with the camera in my garden.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Oh my goodness, I just can't believe the beauty you have there! Such variety in your birdies! And squirrels! Everyone talks about what a pain squirrels are, but I love them and I'd let them eat all the birdseed they liked. Lovely photos.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Yes I do enjoy backyard bird watching. I don't get as many as you have. Your pictures of them are beautiful. I love the squirrel posing alongside the rest. You sure capture their personality. I think that they think--you are one of them.

  50. Hi Jan

Thank you for your kind comments on my blog.
I really appreciate it and it´s making me happy when you stop bay.
Fantastic photo of the lovely birds, I think you could make a book of all you beautiful bird-photos.
    Have a great week

  51. Wonderful photos, Jan! I'm so jealous of your bluebirds, I have none in my woods. Is that Squirrel trying to pose as a bird? He does look cold and hungry!

  52. Beautiful pictures of the birds, and I feel a bit sorry for the little squirrel looks as he is freezing.

  56. I love backyard birds, I try to make it inviting for them, but don’t get the collection that you have

  57. I love your photos! You have such an awesome variety of birds! We just started feeding the birds this winter, and just saw sparrows and squirrels.

Now that spring is here, we have seen robins, blue jays, cardinals, doves, and grackles. I haven't seen them on the feeders, though.

I hope your snow has melted!
