Goldfinch eating seeds from Black-Eyed Susan...This is a big reason I garden!
Leaving the seed-heads on the plants feeds the birds through the fall and winter.
But as you can see, this was in the middle of summer...(July, to be exact). The birds enjoy the seeds of Rudbeckia even in summer, because the petals fall off throughout the growing season, and the seed-heads dry out even as new ones are being produced.
What gifts have you discovered today? Until next time,

Great shots of the goldfinch! I garden for the birds too. I love watching them.
ReplyDeleteThey are beautiful creatures, Alison!
DeleteJan I love the seed heads in fall and winter and watch all the birds gorge on them....great shots!!
ReplyDeleteIt is such a pleasant and readily-available past-time, Donna...thanks!
DeleteAmerican Goldfinches look very different from ours (yours are much brighter). (Ditto Robins and Robins.) I was delighted in the autumn to have three of our kind of goldfinches feasting on my teasel seeds.
ReplyDeleteThat's wonderful, Esther...I sure hope you got some great photos! Our male goldfinches (the ones who get the brightest) do get a bit dull in winter...in fact it's hard to tell the male and female (who is much more 'drab' all year) apart right now.
DeleteWe garden for the same reasons, Jan. But I always knew we have much in common. P. x
ReplyDeleteAhh, that's nice of you to say, Pam...I'm sure we enjoy many of the same things, being gardeners and all ;)
