This morning as I was out with our 2 doxies, I snapped a few photos of some of my Hellebores beginning to bloom amongst the thick layers of leaves:
Christmas Rose: H. niger "Jacob" |
H. ballardiae "Pink Frost" |
Over time, the names fade a bit and the squirrels chew on the labels, but for the most part they work well to keep me from being confused about 'what is what' in the garden!
It's also somewhat easy to distinguish these particular Helleborus varieties from the orientalis and hybrid varieties because these have thicker, 'leatherier' leaves.
What gifts have you discovered today? Until next time,

I also love how long-lasting the blooms are on Hellebores, because of the bracts.
ReplyDeleteThat's a sweet find. So pretty.
ReplyDeleteWow. What a beautiful rose.
ReplyDeleteHow nice to have these blooms in December! My hellebores (I've forgotten which type) don't bloom until early spring, but the foliage stays green all winter, which I find amazing in my zone 5/6 garden.
ReplyDeleteHow nice to see these blooming
ReplyDeleteI should get some H. niger, the only one I have that blooms this early is H. foetidus, and it has a hard time staying upright.
