What was I doing this past weekend? Planting Natives, of course!
I try to get my natives from plant sales with the local wildflower and master gardener groups; or, order from reputable online nurseries. But I have to admit I was a sucker for these packaged wildflowers in my big box store before Christmas. I don't know if they will even make it but I'm trying anyway.
*I know some native plant experts might not recommend this...for many reasons--one of which, in addition to 'are they viable?' is, where was the 'source'. If they were taken 'from the wild' and then sold, that's a 'no no'. (It's a no-no to take them from the wild, period...even if you do not intend to sell them. So please don't dig up natives while you're walking in the woods) ;)
At any rate, because they'd been sitting in my garage in packages for over a month, and it was a fairly decent day outside, I took the opportunity to dig 3 inch holes and plant them. The packages said they might not sprout until the 2nd year, so I probably won't have a 'verdict' about the success or failure of these little packages right away.
What gifts have you discovered today? Until next time,

Now that is splendid
ReplyDeleteThank you, Catherine ;)
DeleteHow exciting to plant natives in January!
ReplyDeleteYes, Donna...the weather had been unseasonably warm so I took advantage of it before it got all cold and rainy...and now snow is now on it's way this evening (or so they say)....
ReplyDeleteI hope your planting is successful. Many pretty flowers in your choices!
ReplyDeleteHi GSS:) Long time no see...how are you? Thanks for stopping by. If and when they bloom I will show them!
DeleteWow, you're lucky you can plant this time of year! The ground is frozen solid here. I can't wait to hear how your new lovelies perform!
ReplyDeleteHi Beth...Well, it was an unusally warm day and I had the bulbs in the garage so I just 'went for it' while I could. Our weather isn't nearly as cold as yours...but tonight it's cooling off again...down in the teens tonight and in the 20's during the day tomorrow. So it's gotten a lot colder than it was when I planted! I will take photos if any of these plants actually take root and live! Thanks for stoppying by:)
