Just in time for January's Garden Bloggers Bloom Day, six of my Hellebore plants have begun to bloom, with the 'Christmas Rose' completely opened:
|
Helleborus x niger 'Jacob' (Christmas Rose)
|
|
Helleborus x nigercors 'HGC Green Corsican' (Winter Rose) |
|
Helleborus hybridus *unknown variety |
|
Helleborus x hybridus 'Red Lady' (Lenten Rose)
|
|
Helleborus x hybridus 'Pine Knot Select' (Lenten Rose)
|
|
Helleborus x ballardiae 'Pink Frost'
|
I have many other Hellebores but as yet, they haven't developed buds, so there will (hopefully) be more in February, March and April.
All three of my Galanthus elwesii (Giant Snowdrops) have been blooming:
|
Galanthus elwesii (Giant Snowdrop) |
|
Galanthus elwesii var.monostichus 'Potter's Prelude' is a November bloomer but didn't develop a flower head this year. Yet to come up out of the ground are three G. nivalis (Common Snowdrop) which bloom much later. |
Amaryllis and Paperwhites bloomed around the holidays and are almost finished, but these photos show them when they were at their peak:
|
Amaryllis hippeastrum 'Red Lion' |
|
Narcissus papyraceus (Paperwhites) |
Two of the four African Violets that I grow year-round are in bloom right now:
|
Saintpaullia (African Violets) |

Hellebores with their heads up! I grew my first hellebore last year and was disappointed so I haven't expanded. The flowers got very tatty very quickly and never looked beautiful like the ones I see on blogs! I love snowdrops. Slugs like snowdrops too (almost as much as they like my garden) so I've never managed to get them to naturalise. I live in hopes!
ReplyDeleteLovely blooms inside and out! I wish I could grow African Violets. That's one plant I never seem to have any luck with.
ReplyDeleteLovely hellebores Jan...already budding so nice....one of mine started to bud and is now buried under snow...
ReplyDeleteDear Jan, Blooms in January -- how lovely! I have a couple of hellebore buds, but no flowers. My buds are very early, though. It's been a strange winter so far. Your houseplants are looking wonderful, too. P. x
ReplyDeleteJan,
ReplyDeleteLooks like we have some of the same hellebore, I have Jacob and Red Lady. Our Helleborus x ballardiae 'Pink Frost' didn't live long, glad you managed to keep it alive. I counted we have 19 hellebores with buds, 3 are doubles!
White blooms against the white snow....stunning. I'm so jealous of your snow drops. Why can't I ever remember to plant them? I luv them so much.
ReplyDeleteHappy 2012 to you, Jan.
What beautiful Hellebore's Jan. I love the Red Lady. I had my first hellebore bloom this week and I was so excited. LOL! Does not take too much to make a gardener happy. Those dainty little Snowdrops always look so pretty. Have a wonderful week.
ReplyDeleteIt's exciting to see so many with hellebores budding... here in Wisconsin we are just now getting a bit of winter with snow and colder temps... I wouldn't be at all surprised to see a late spring which has been typical of these late begun winters in recent years. Your african violets are lovely as well! Larry
ReplyDeleteYou are so lucky to be able to grow them (and the snowdrops). They don't do well here. Your hellebores look so magical with the snow on them.

I love the photos of your winter garden. Hard to garden in my blizzardy northern clime, so I appreciate the opportunity to "walk" through yours! :)
ReplyDeleteI love Christmas Rose in the snow!! Great Hellebores. I have Pink Frost too, got it late last year. It isn't too big...but it is alive, a small success. Stay warm!!
ReplyDeleteHi Jan. Thanks for showing us your beautiful hellebores. I especially like the "Red Lady" even though it wasn't in full bloom - the colour looks so intense.
ReplyDeleteI'm satisfying my gardening urges with paperwhites and orchids right now here in Canada
Oh that ruffly african violet is to die for! Now I know what to ask for for Valentine's day.
ReplyDeleteYou sure have some splendid and lovely plants for January bloom day!
I can't believe it's Hellebore time already for you! Since yours are early, I hope ours will be, too. Right now the snow is keeping them warm and toasty. Beautiful shots--especially the blooms with snow on them!
ReplyDeleteGlad your giant snowdrops are all blooming. Too bad about the 'Potter's Prelude'--that is not typical--at least it was free. Your hellebores look great.
ReplyDeleteLovely blooms for January! Your African violets are enchanting.
ReplyDeleteI can still comment on yours. Will jump over to another's to see if it is possible to comment there. crazy
ReplyDeleteGood to know, Janet...I'll keep the embedded comments for now;-)
DeleteThe Hellebores are so pretty. I'm really anxious to see mine bloom. They were getting close, but the snow slowed them down a bit. I found one little bloom on one of my African Violets, I'm always surprised to see them.
ReplyDeleteOh my ~ you have TONS of beautiful blooms Jan. I'm jealous!!
