My Gardens

My gardens have been works in progress, beginning in July 1996, when we moved to our current home. The house had been built in 1989 and the yard was established with conifers, oaks, hollies and a few shrubs--including quite a few flowering azalea bushes in the front yard, which look lovely in spring. But I wanted more color, so I (along with my helpful husband) immediately went to work in the yard, adding new garden areas, trees, bushes and perennials. The gardens continue to change and grow each year. Below are photos and descriptions of our individual gardens and the various plants, bushes, trees, etc. that grow in them.

Backyard:

Spring (2009) we gave ourselves a backyard makeover. Mike and I expanded the garden that we had already created several years earlier, added lots of new plants, brought in truckloads of soil, mulch, rocks, stone, etc.

Here is a very partial and incomplete list of plants that I've added to my garden. Some are natives, some are native culivars/hybrids, some are woodland shade lovers, others are being added to keep as a record and I will eventually separate them into proper categories. If they are not classified or labeled correctly here it is simply because I have not had the time.

This list is incomplete and will be updated as time allows:

Updates:  June, 2010

This area has always been shady...until this year, when I have noticed it getting intense afternoon sun. We had some trees in the front yard thinned out last fall, and now the sun beats down in this backyard 'shade' garden. I have been moving some plants to shadier areas, as necessary. As always, it is an ongoing work in progress.

I will add notes and photos about the rest of the yard, including the front gardens, as time permits. Most of this information is already in previous posts.  Here is one such post, which includes some of what I planted in the completed space.

See this link for  a few 'before' and 'after' photos.

  2. I guess we should all do that, take pictures several times a day and make note of the shade. My space was not so shady years ago, but the trees are growing around it higher and higher and casting more shade. Unwanted, but I have to adapt.

and your shade spots are lovely.

  3. Thanks so much, Carolyn. It does seem to change from year to year, as I add new natives, remove plants that haven't done well (or have died), divide plants and transplant them, etc. Thanks for stopping by;-)

Thanks for visiting, Rootdigger. It can get frustrating sometimes, when we realize that the same garden area changes from season to season, month to month, etc...but that is also part of the fun and 'experience' of gardening. Change is inevitable with the growth of trees, position of the sun,etc...It also gives a chance to try new plants that we might not have been able to have before. Thanks for visiting:-)
