As I was walking around the back gardens this morning, waiting for my 2 dachshunds to do their business, I noticed they were busy with something. Hmm...a snake skin!

Concrete evidence I have a visitor hiding someplace around the gardens. Haven't seen it, don't know where it is. Don't mind having it as a visitor...AS LONG AS IT'S NOT THE POISONOUS KIND!!!

I will be keeping my eyes wide opened and my feet covered as I walk out there. I wouldn't want to startle this critter and accidentally step on it. It might freak out and bite me...not to mention I might freak out, too!

A cool thing to find. It's probably one of the good guys, busily eating bad bugs in your garden. Pace!
ReplyDeleteHi Helen ;) Yes, I'm thinking it's probably a Rat Snake or something innocuous. I like having them and hope they will eat ALL of my voles, who've been dining on many of my plants!
DeleteWe have garter snakes here. Their favorite spot is the compost pile. Our next door neighbor has moth balls in her garage to repel them away. One year, she put them around the fence, which made it miserable for me to be outside in the area. The neighbors kill them when they see them. When I see them, I always tell them to stay in our yard as they are scurrying to get away from me.
ReplyDeleteYes, I have startled them, and been startled as I'm turning compost. I've even come up with them in my shovel or spade as I was digging, but at least garter snakes have no desire for a confrontation with me.
I wouldn't like it if it smelled like moth balls around the outskirts of my yard either, Sue! I too, wouldn't kill a snake, unless I knew it was venemous and it was in my yard! With the dogs, I wouldn't want to take chances. I'm pretty sure it's probably a garter snake or black snake...harmless...and boy, do I have a vole problem around here! I would welcome a few more so they can chow down on my nuisance critters!!

ReplyDeleteI can just picture your dog wagging her tail with a snake skin in her mouth, Karin! That's just how 1 of mine acted when he found a baby squirrel that had fallen from a tree (it was already dead)...he was so thrilled and it took some work to get it out of his mouth!!
DeleteOne of our volunteers brought in a bag of snake skins today seeking an ID. She has one living in her pond, and hopefully it is a non-venomous water snake, and not a moccasin.
ReplyDeleteWow--a 'BAG' of snakeskins?! That's crazy. I think I would fill up the pond with dirt if that happened here! Sure hope they turn out to be from non-venemous snakes, Les!!
