Earth Day Celebration: Rain Barrel GIVEAWAY!!!

In recognition of Earth Day, which is April 22, 2010, the Garden Bloggers Sustainable Living project was created to share ways that garden bloggers are actively practicing a greener lifestyle and contributing to protecting our environment. In that same spirit, I'm having a Give Away!

*The Grand Prize:

Author, syndicated columnist, media host of Growing A Greener World, Joe Lampl has arranged for a Fiskars Rain Barrel donation, which will serve as the Grand Prize for the Garden Bloggers Sustainability project that I am hosting. Click Here to watch Joe demonstrate how to install a Fiskars Rain Barrel.

Additional Give Away items include:

West County Gardener has kindly donated 3 pairs of their gloves for this give away--including their Work glove and Rose glove.

"The snug yet comfortable fit, the stylish design and attractive colors really make wearing these tough duty garden gloves something to look forward to. And with the new eco-friendly design, each pair keeps one 8 oz. plastic bottle from the landfill." $20 West County Gardener

The generous folks at CobraHead are donating TWO of their earth friendly handtools, the CobraHead weeders:

"The CobraHead is the king of the hill as far as we’re concerned when it comes to the best tool for getting out those deep tap-rooted weeds. This tool feels great in your hand, is fun to use and is even designed for precision weeding around tender plants." $24.95 short handle  $59.95 long handle  www.cobrahead.com

Garden Shoes Online (many of you know Teresa from her garden blog, Gardening With Soule), is donating a jar of GreenCure with a spray bottle:

"GreenCure fungicide, for control of powdery mildew, black spot and otherplant diseases". $20.95 at Garden Shoes Online.

Suzy, from Hip Mountain Mama, is donating a reusable stainless steel water bottle, that appropriately spells out Love the Earth:

"Go green with these earth friendly reuseable water bottles! Help reduce unneccessary environmental waste caused by plastic water bottles and look cool doing it". $16 at Hip Mountain Mama.

Lastly, I am giving away a new, reusable and earth-friendly tote/grocery bag with my Maine wildflower photograph and the words 'Earth day is every day'.

 *See details.

Directions:
1. Create a *new post, on your active garden blog, sharing what you are doing in your yard/garden and/or plan to start doing, to contribute to a sustainable lifestyle.  *If you have written a previous post about Earth Day or 'being green', and you think it's relevant, you can use it, but please re-post it with the current date and name of this project, proper links, etc.
2. In your your post, refer to this project and include the badge either in your post or your sidebar. Add a reciprocal link back to This Page.
3. Mention in your post that Earth Day is on April 22, 2010. The EPA website has a section to give you some information:  Earthday

4. Come back and attach the link to YOUR post in a comment, either on this post, or the original post announcing the project, NLT April 15, 2010, by 11:59 pm.  I will then add it to the list of participants posts. *(When you come back to leave your link please also tell me your glove size in case you get chosen to receive a pair. I was given two women's medium and one men's large).

Determining winners:
I will read all posts to be sure the steps outlined were followed, and that something of some substance has been written. It need not be a Pulitzer-winning-essay and is not a 'competition'. A paragraph is fine (more if you wish) or at least a list of things you do, or plan to do--and please, not just a few sentences about why you want the rain barrel.  All qualifying entries will be placed in a drawing. The names will be drawn at random and winners will be announced in a separate post on or before April 20, 2010.

NOTE: Gifts can be sent to Canada and the US, only. However, many bloggers from other countries have submitted posts!

I came up with this idea while visiting Dee, at Red Dirt Ramblings as I read through comments left to her describing some of the ways many of you bloggers are actively practicing a greener lifestyle, and I was inspired!  If you haven't visited her recently SHE is having a CONTEST for a 'Fiskars Momentum reel mower' to get us thinking more about (and practicing) greener living! *Her Contest Has Ended.

I made a commitment to make some personal contributions to this lifestyle myself this year, and I am going to write about them in some upcoming posts.  I can't wait to read your posts and share our ideas announcing to the blogging world that Earth Day is not just ONE day but EVERY day! Let's share how we all contribute to giving Thanks to Mother Earth!

*View the participants posts HERE and check back as they are continually being added.

*View the prize winners (randomly chosen) HERE.

--Today I am thankful for gardeners who care about the earth.

*All products being offered are donations. A product review was not requested nor was monetary compensation offered or requested by the author.

  2. What a great idea, Jan. From your blog I linked to the Earth Day site to check things out and pick up a widget or two. This year I'm not gardening (much) since we're sorta perching until deciding where to finally live (long story) so I'll likely not be participating - BUT, Yay You for doing this!

  11. Good for you Jan! We need more people choosing to go green and spreading the word about it.

As Marnie said, this is a great idea for a topic. Some of us have been less than productive on our posts lately. :)

  17. Great idea, Jan! Even if I don't get a post up in time, I am making a conscious effort to be more eco-friendly in my everyday life. If each of us takes just a few steps towards a greener lifestyle, it can make a huge difference in our world. Thanks for promoting this.

  18. Great idea! We have been trying to weave sustainable practices throughout our lives here, so I'll have to sit down and think about them, as they've become so much of a habit.

  19. Hi Jan! I've already done my post, but I had to stop in to tell you that I was able to purchase 6 (six!) 55 gallon barrels today (for using for rain-water collection)! Quite honestly, I'm only keeping three of them. Three fortunate friends get the others. :-)

How fun that you're receiving more items for your give-away!

  20. Great idea Jan, I can't wait to read some more inspiring posts of those who join in! I think I'm a bit far away to join the contest ;) but I think I'll work on a post to join in just for the fun of it.

My only problem is I'm a little confused. In Australia 'Earth Hour' on the 27th March seems to be promoted more widely that 'Earth Day' and while it seems the two should be linked in some way I can't find if/how they are. More research for me!

  32. Hi Jan, thanks for asking me to do this. As many of your fellow blogger are from the US, I have written a peice about trying to be green in the UK, I would be interested to hear how it differs with you.

  33. I would hardly say guru of green but thanks for the comment! I think that if you want to try living sustainably start with something easy like turning the temperature of your washing machine down or switching your dishwasher to eco because once it is done, it is done so you don't need to remember again. Get into the habit of putting your vegetable peelings and coffee grounds into a bowl on your kitchen side ready for the composter rather than straight in the bin. Have your recycling bins outside the door ready to catch your cans and bottles because when the weather is bad you won't want to venture much past your front door. Don't choose something radical, because it will likely be novelty and once the novely wears off you will stop doing it. Living totally sustainabley is a pipe dream for most because, like alot of things it comes at a price and one that few of us can afford. One thing I didn't mention in the post and I don't know if it is something that you have in the States, but all new houses in the UK are now built with water meters which does help. Thanks again, hope the competition goes well. I am not being very green today because my lap top has been on all day and I have had my heating on higher than normal because it is so cold! Good luck with the competition and keep in touch.

  34. Jan, I just posted about Sustainable Living. Thanks for sending me a message about it! I've been so swamped that I've hardly had a chance to visit other blogs, and I'm grateful you came to me. Thank you!

I notice on your Comments message that you've had to resort to word verification. I'm going to have to do the same. The spam has found me. Ugh. Such an annoying pain.

  36. Hi Jan, thanks for helping raise awareness for Earth Day. I agree, everyday is and should be Earth Day. I wrote a post for Earth Day a couple of years ago, which can be seen by clicking here-Azalea Earth Day. It still is one of my favorite posts, and pretty much says how we feel about the topic. Hope it is okay to link an old post. :-)

  37. Hi Frances, it's preferable to put up a new post, announcing this project with a reciprocal link and bringing attention to Earth Day 2010. Your post is great...do you think you could just re-post it by slightly changing the title and intro? Jan

  38. Dear Jan - as promised - a contribution from Brittany in France on keeping green! This is a fantastic idea -hope it might encourage and give new ideas too the link is http://jardinmiranda.blogspot.com/2010/02/going-green-just-has-to-be-seen.html Hope it's okay.

  39. What a neat idea. You and I seem to have a lot in common!

I did an Earth Day post last year, trying to preach without offending anyone - ha. I'm obviously not entering it because it's old, but thought you might find it interesting: http://lawofthelandblog.blogspot.com/2009/04/happy-earth-day.html

I also have a series of posts on my blog called "Easy Being Green," which you can find on my blog by searching that phrase.

Love your blog and will be back to visit!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Thank you all for you great comments on this post! I have really enjoyed reading what you do to contribute to keeping our earth sustainable...and if you haven't yet posted, there's still time. Please, please don't worry about this being a 'detailed' post (unless you want it to be)...I really only asked for one or two things that you do! Writing essays worthy of publication in journals is fabulous but not necessary;-)

The main purpose for this was to announce the coming of Earth Day, which is April 22, 2010--and I'm hoping to get the word out about that. I also think it's nice to bring this to others' attention, because believe it or not, just because people are 'gardeners' does NOT mean they are helping with sustainability. I was surprised to find out how many gardeners actually don't give it a thought! I'm only really learning about it,myself, in more detail.

If you've written a post like this another year, that's fantastic! We should write them every year! My hope was to get a really big gift (ie: a rain barrel) but that didn't come through yet. I would like to have this project every year and maybe in the future we can obtain a 'bigger' give away item.

If you have a post you've written in the past, you can still use it here--just 'tweak' it a bit, change the date for the Earth Day announcement, mention this project & link it, and shorten it if you like--one or 2 things you do is more than enough. You can just list them, no need to write a huge essay--unless you feel compelled to do so!

Thanks to everyone who has joined in;-)

  44. Thanks, Jean. I would love you to participate. I look forward to it!!

    ReplyDelete
  45. What a great idea! I'd want to participate even if I there weren't any prizes.

Just one question: What should the picture link to? Just your blog, or to this post, or?

    ReplyDelete
  46. Hey TM, I am excited you'll be joining in;-) After you write the post leave a message on this post, with your link. In your post, you don't 'have' to put the picture, but you can link it and/or a line in your post to either this post or the 'other' that talks about this, where I actually list the participants. posts. Or both;-) Looking forward to having you join in. I think some people are hesitant to do this because they think it has to be a really thorough write up of all the things they do...not the case at all. I just really wanted to have people list or mention a thing or 2. It isn't a 'contest' where I choose the 'best' essays-although, having read the ones so far, it should be--because they're all really good. I'm planning to write a brief one and keep it very simple.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Hi Jan, I think this is a great initiative of yours! I've already enjoyed reading some of the other blogs posts on Earth Day that you've listed. Here's my contribution:

  48. Thanks for your comment on my blog and for your kind remarks about my garden. I'm so glad I got myself an allotment here - it's a great institution and has really enriched my life. I'm sure you're more ecological in your own garden practice than you're letting on! Your initiative also made me think about a few things, e.g. I've been wanting to replace some of the lawn with a patch of meadow, maybe I'll go through with it now.

  104. Jan, I too have been surprised at the number of gardeners (and even nature-lovers) who don't connect what they love to the way they live. Kudos to you for putting this out in the gardening community!

My rather weird contribution is up at http://www.tulipsinthewoods.com/science/sustainable-seeds/, and I'm encouraging people to check out your list of excellent posts with old and new ideas about how we can contribute to the health of our planet, instead of sucking it dry.

I remember my first Earth Day well. I love the idea of making this a big holiday on the web.

  105. I think this is a wonderful idea. I found your blog through Phillip's (Dirt Therapy). I've started and stalled my post a few times, but it is finally up. You can find it at http://showerfreshgarden.blogspot.com/2010/04/garden-bloggers-sustainible-living.html.

  107. Hi Jan, sorry I messed up earlier today. I commented on your current blog as opposed to your original blog post announcing the project. Here is the link to my post: http://voiceinthegarden.blogspot.com/2010/04/earth-day-way-of-life.html

Job well done! Thanks for allowing us to "speak". Diana
